Sync client

Keeps a folder on your computer in step with your account. The Windows, macOS and Linux downloads below are packaged apps with a tray icon and Node.js bundled. The command-line client below needs Node.js 20 or newer; the packaged apps do not.

FileNest Sync 0.3.2 for Windows

Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit

Runs in the system tray, syncs in the background, and opens the control panel in its own window. Node.js is bundled — nothing else to install.

Windows will warn you about this installer. It is not code-signed — that needs a certificate we have not bought yet — so SmartScreen shows “Windows protected your PC”. Choose More info → Run anyway. Check the checksum below first if you would rather not take that on trust.

FileNest Sync 0.3.1 for macOS

macOS 11 Big Sur or newer

Lives in the menu bar, not the Dock. Drag it to Applications, sign in, and it syncs in the background.

macOS will refuse to open this the first time. The app is neither signed nor notarised, so Gatekeeper says it “cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified”. Right-click the app and choose Open, then Open again in the dialog. Plain double-clicking will not offer that choice. Check the checksum below first if you would rather not take that on trust.

The AppImage needs to be made executable. Run chmod +x on it before the first launch — the deb and the tarball already carry the bit. The tray icon also needs an AppIndicator extension on GNOME, which most distributions ship but Ubuntu's stock GNOME does not enable. Check the checksum below first if you would rather not take that on trust.

Install

Installs to your user profile, adds filenest to your PATH, and starts syncing at login. No administrator rights, nothing written outside your home directory.

macOS and Linux

Both verify the checksum before installing anything, and both take --uninstall to remove everything they added. Read the script before piping it to a shell — you should for anyone's.

The last command starts syncing and prints a link to a control panel you open in your browser — status, pause, and a confirmation prompt when a large deletion is held back. Use sync or watch instead if you would rather stay on the command line.

Before you point it at real work

  • • Try it on a scratch folder first. It syncs deletions in both directions.
  • • A pass that would delete more than 10 items, or most of what it tracks, stops and asks. Smaller deletions go through immediately.
  • • It polls every 15 seconds rather than watching the filesystem, so changes are not instant.
  • • Files shared with you arrive under “Shared with me” and are read-only. Changes you make there stay on that device.
  • • Deleted files are recoverable from the web trash for 30 days.
